About SSSL

Who are we?

SSSL is a volunteer organization dedicated to building, maintaining, and developing trails in and around the forests of Silkeborg. We work closely with the Danish Nature Agency, Silkeborg Municipality, and local outdoor communities to create sustainable, high-quality trails for everyone.

This applies to everyone; hikers, riders, mountain bikers, etc. It is all based on volunteer work. It is a constructive forum – i.e. a forum for those who want to contribute to better conditions for users and those who want to share information and inspiration and agree on construction and maintenance activities.

Volunteers took the initiative (2014)

When the Nordskov trail in Silkeborg became worn out by mud and use, a group of passionate mountain bikers took action themselves and began renovating the trail in close collaboration with the Danish Nature Agency – the start of what became SSSL.

SSSL becomes an association (2016)

The volunteer community grew quickly and was formally founded as an association in 2016 with Erik Skovgaard Knudsen as the first chairman. The vision was clear: Denmark's best network of paths and trails – for all forest users.

From mud hole to championship (2016)

The Nordskov trail was transformed by volunteer labor and was able to form the framework for the Danish Mountain Bike Championship in 2016. Politiken called it one of the country's 10 best trails, and over 50,000 riders used it annually.

Vesterskoven and Denmark's longest downhill run (2016–2018)

A new 17 km long MTB trail was created in Vesterskoven – including Denmark's longest continuous downhill. The trail was built in collaboration with archaeologists, as Iron Age finds required special consideration.

International expertise and knowledge sharing (2018)

SSSL invited two international track builders to teach the volunteers world-class techniques. This strengthened the professional level and set new standards for sustainable track building in Denmark.

Silkeborg as an MTB mecca and voluntary role model (2018–2025)

With more than 3,500 members and ongoing trail development, SSSL has become a key player in Silkeborg's ambition to be "Denmark's Outdoor Capital". The guild is now also inspiring other municipalities to volunteer trail work.

Board of Directors

The board consists of 5 members and two alternates, with positions as chairman, vice chairman and treasurer.
The board is responsible for the daily management of the association. This primarily consists of the following areas in addition to ad hoc tasks:

Planning and execution of path and track construction days.
Contact the Danish Nature Agency and Silkeborg Municipality for advice and guidance regarding the establishment and renovation of trails.
